Our doctors perform a variety of procedures to manage heart and vascular conditions. Advanced imaging provides detailed views of the heart and blood vessels, aiding in the detection of blockages or disease.
For direct interventions, our team perform cardiac catheterisation to examine arteries for blockages. If necessary, they may conduct angioplasty and stenting to restore blood flow in narrowed or clogged vessels. Treatments such as ablation therapy to correct irregular heart rhythms. Surgeons may implant pacemakers or defibrillators to regulate heartbeats in patients with severe arrhythmias.
Invasive Coronary Angiography
Understanding your heart’s arteries.
Coronary angiography is a specialised test to check for blockages or narrowing in the heart’s arteries. A thin tube (catheter) is inserted, usually through the wrist or groin, and guided to the heart. Dye is then injected to allow X-ray imaging of the arteries. This helps us determine if there’s a need for treatment such as a stent. It’s usually done as a day procedure and is performed under local anaesthetic with light sedation if needed. You’ll be monitored closely throughout.
Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (Stent)
Opening blocked arteries to improve blood flow.
If a narrowing or blockage is found during coronary angiography, we may proceed with inserting a stent — a small mesh tube that keeps the artery open. This procedure, called PCI, uses the same access site as the angiogram and can usually be done immediately if required. Most patients go home the same day or the following morning. You’ll receive medications to help prevent clots and promote healing, and we’ll give you clear instructions on recovery and follow-up.
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI)
A less invasive alternative to open-heart surgery for aortic valve disease.
TAVI is a treatment for severe aortic stenosis — a narrowing of the heart’s main valve. Instead of open-heart surgery, a new valve is inserted through a blood vessel (usually in the leg) and placed inside the diseased valve. This procedure is typically done under sedation or light anaesthesia and offers fast recovery times. You’ll usually stay in hospital for a few days, and we’ll work with you to ensure a smooth recovery and follow-up plan.
Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) Closure
Closing a small hole in the heart to reduce stroke risk.
A patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a small flap-like opening between the upper chambers of the heart that didn’t close after birth — a common condition in many people. In some patients, especially those who have had an unexplained stroke, closing the PFO can help reduce the risk of further strokes.
The procedure is done through a small tube inserted into a vein in the leg. A closure device is guided to the heart and placed across the PFO, where it seals the opening. It’s a minimally invasive day procedure, often performed under light sedation. Most patients recover quickly and go home the same day or the following morning, with ongoing follow-up and short-term blood thinning medication as needed.
Permanent Pacemaker Implantation
Helping your heart beat steadily and reliably.
A permanent pacemaker is a small device implanted under the skin, usually just below the collarbone, to help regulate slow or irregular heartbeats. It sends gentle electrical impulses to keep your heart beating at a normal rhythm.
The procedure is done under local anaesthetic with sedation if needed. One or more leads (wires) are guided through a vein into the heart and connected to the pacemaker, which is then placed under the skin. The procedure usually takes about an hour, and most patients stay in hospital overnight for monitoring.
After the procedure, you’ll have some restrictions on arm movement for a short period, and we’ll provide clear instructions for recovery and follow-up. Regular checks ensure your pacemaker continues to work optimally.
