Dr Max Ray

MBBS, MD, FRACP

Dr Max Ray is a consultant cardiologist at Newcastle Adult & Paediatric Heart Centre with a focus on sports cardiology, cardiomyopathy, and cardiac imaging.

He completed his medical training at the University of Newcastle, followed by Basic Physician Training at Royal North Shore Hospital. He undertook advanced cardiology training at John Hunter Hospital and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP). He subsequently completed fellowship training in cardiac imaging and heart failure at John Hunter Hospital.

Dr Ray undertook a dedicated Sports Cardiology Fellowship at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne and the National Centre for Sports Cardiology, and maintains ongoing professional links with these institutions. He also holds a public appointment at John Hunter Hospital.

Dr Ray provides cardiovascular assessment and care for athletes of all levels, from elite professionals to recreational athletes, and has experience working with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS), and professional sporting organisations including the AFL and NRL. He sees patients referred from Newcastle, the Hunter Region, the Central Coast, and across New South Wales.

Clinical interests include general cardiology, sports cardiology, cardiac imaging (echocardiography and CT coronary angiography), arrhythmia and cardiomyopathy in athletes, cardiac genetics, and heart failure.
